The training process is customized
to each user based on his or her needs. In general, users are expected to
have a basic knowledge of wet lab techniques and lab etiquette as a prerequisite.
Training covers fundamental concepts related to the process of interest,
safety and cleanliness issues, and operation of equipment.
For a list of common microfabrication processes and other laboratory
protocols, click here or on the Protocols link above. New users are encouraged
to study these protocols to identify which ones would be relevant to their
work and also to prepare themselves for training.
New users should also read the laboratory rules and regulations (click
here for the regulations).
BioMEMS Resource
Center Introductory form
Prior to obtaining access to the facilities, potential users must contact
a faculty member and the lab manager, Mr. Octavio Hurtado, to discuss
their requirements. To facilitate the evaluation of individual needs,
a number of forms have to be filled out and submitted prior to training.
The introductory form is the first form to be filled and includes contact
information and a very brief description of the project where the microscale
tools are to be used.
Click on the above title for a copy of the form.
Prior Training
All prospective microfabrication lab users will receive training regarding
the proper behavior and safety procedures specific for clean room environment.
Previous training at other institutions, though it is helpful, does not
automatically qualify the new lab user to work at the BioMEMS Resource
Center facilities. In addition, all prospective users are required to
attend an MGH Fire and Safety Training Session.
It is optional, but recommended, that prospective clean room users be
trained in mask design techniques using an AutoCAD application.
