Laboratory Rules
and Regulations
The BioMEMS
Resource Center is a shared facility with many users from different institutions.
Users of the lab will be expected to adhere to the guidelines of the MGH
Manual of Safety Policies and the MGH Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan.
Following are some general guidelines which ensure smooth operation of
the center's facilities and equipment.
General
- All users should complete safety training before working in the lab
- No food or beverages should be brought to or consumed inside the
lab
- Common areas such as countertops, sinks and hoods should be cleaned
after use
- Chemicals should be stored appropriately (e.g. flammable materials
in the flammable cabinet, acid and bases stored in separate, designated
areas) and within secondary containers, if necessary
- If storage of materials in refrigerators or freezers is required,
all items must be labeled with the name and date
- If a common reagent or disposable supplies (pipette tips, gloves,
kimwipes, tissue culture flasks, petri dishes, etc.) are running low,
the lab manager should be notified so that the items can be ordered
without disrupting work in the lab
Cell Culture
- Gloves must be work at all times while working with biological materials
(cells, blood, etc.), and working areas should be thoroughly cleaned
and disinfected
- Biohazard waste bins should not be allowed to overflow with waste;
they should be sealed and replaced in a timely manner
Microfabrication
- All new processes should be discussed with and approved by the lab
manager. The user will be expected to provide all the details of the
proposed process and explain the objectives clearly
- Any spills or breakages should be immediately reported to the lab
manager
- After hours (after 5pm and before 9am) use of the clean room is not
permitted for outside users
